Mistborn trilogy was the first Brandon Sanderson's work I've read and I was actually surprised by how much I liked it。It's definitelly not my taste, it's too YAish to me, I didn't like most of the characters, I didn't enjoy the romance and I think these books could be cut in half - there was a lot of unnecessary fluff in them。 I'm also not the biggest fan of hard magic systems, but I don't mind them, when they are executed well and Mistborn's magic system might the best example of that。However, Mistborn trilogy was the first Brandon Sanderson's work I've read and I was actually surprised by how much I liked it。It's definitelly not my taste, it's too YAish to me, I didn't like most of the characters, I didn't enjoy the romance and I think these books could be cut in half - there was a lot of unnecessary fluff in them。 I'm also not the biggest fan of hard magic systems, but I don't mind them, when they are executed well and Mistborn's magic system might the best example of that。However, the plot and worldbuilding in this trilogy was interesting enough for me to keep reading and enjoying it。 And I have to say, endings of all three books are absolute killers。 I also find Sanderson's prose and overall writing style to be briliant。I would rate still series solid 7/10。 I liked it and I can see this being favorite fantasy series of some people, especially younger readers。 It's just not my taste。 。。。more

I've never been into the fantasy genre (Harry Potter being the glaring exception), but these books fully converted me。 I could not put them down。 The final book honestly left me in a full on stupor, musing over the amazing world that Sanderson created。 Obsession on full blast。 I've never been into the fantasy genre (Harry Potter being the glaring exception), but these books fully converted me。 I could not put them down。 The final book honestly left me in a full on stupor, musing over the amazing world that Sanderson created。 Obsession on full blast。 。。。more

I'd describe this as very good, although not as good as The Way of Kings or Sanderson's entries in The Wheel of Time。 The characters are excellent, and the plot, whilst I guessed what would happen, is also very good。 Unfortunately, and much to my surprise, the main thing that let it down was the description of the magic system。 To be clear, the magic system is meticulously thought-out and really interesting。 But Mr Sanderson tends to describe how each action is achieved in great detail by refere I'd describe this as very good, although not as good as The Way of Kings or Sanderson's entries in The Wheel of Time。 The characters are excellent, and the plot, whilst I guessed what would happen, is also very good。 Unfortunately, and much to my surprise, the main thing that let it down was the description of the magic system。 To be clear, the magic system is meticulously thought-out and really interesting。 But Mr Sanderson tends to describe how each action is achieved in great detail by referencing the different metals applied。 It shows a level of forethought and care that is part of what makes him such a great author, but it does wear you out a bit by the end。 This is one of those rare occasions where I'd actually like to have had a bit less detail。 But still, it's a fantastic read。 。。。more

Engrossing and beautifulThe characters in this book were very well thought out and believable。 The world, the plot, the actions and interactions well thought out and planned to an extent that you didn’t realize until the very end of the book。I am in absolute fan of this series and the author

Excellent story but large portions were unnecessarily stretched as if to somehow ge a trilogy out of what would have been a great single。 I loved the story so 5 * for that。 But the conflicts were too drawn out and I found myself skipping bunches of pages at a stretch。 The fight sequences felt repetitive and monotonous。 Vin was irritatingly "gallant"。 I liked Elend, Sez and TanSoon。 Excellent story but large portions were unnecessarily stretched as if to somehow ge a trilogy out of what would have been a great single。 I loved the story so 5 * for that。 But the conflicts were too drawn out and I found myself skipping bunches of pages at a stretch。 The fight sequences felt repetitive and monotonous。 Vin was irritatingly "gallant"。 I liked Elend, Sez and TanSoon。 。。。more

For me, the breakdown goes like this:The Final Empire: 8/10。 A fantastic introduction to the world, the characters, but most importantly of all, the magic systems。 Not perfect, but it's a damn good read for anyone who may be looking to get into a fantasy series without the genre's staple of overly-flowery language (some would say the simplistic language is a drawback; I respectfully disagree。 I think it makes the book very accessible and anything that gets more people to read is always a plus in For me, the breakdown goes like this:The Final Empire: 8/10。 A fantastic introduction to the world, the characters, but most importantly of all, the magic systems。 Not perfect, but it's a damn good read for anyone who may be looking to get into a fantasy series without the genre's staple of overly-flowery language (some would say the simplistic language is a drawback; I respectfully disagree。 I think it makes the book very accessible and anything that gets more people to read is always a plus in my book。 No pun intended。) The physical aspects of the worldbuilding are interesting but the social aspects of the worldbuilding could have used more。 The characters aren't the most lovable but they're more than just serviceable: they're the ones you want to see more of so you can try to like them more。 And it has both my favorite fight (namely (view spoiler)[the Kelsier vs。 Inquisitor fight at the end (hide spoiler)]) and probably my favorite last-minute revelation out of the entire series。 Overall: heck yeah。The Well of Ascension: 8。5/10。 Unlike some people, I love having politics in my books so this was already shaping up to be more enjoyable than the first。 The character work is better here and there's more of an even spread of POVs (as opposed to just the two from the first book), and the character developments are, for the most part, believable。 At some points it got dangerously close to being obnoxious but it never quite crosses that line for me。 The plot is a lot less straightforward this time around and while I think it succeeds more often than not, there are some plot points that (even with the gift of hindsight) I still wonder at their necessity。 The big reveal at the end was the least exciting for me out of the entire series, but at least this one hindsight does convince me was a necessary evil。 (view spoiler)[No pun intended, Ruin。 (hide spoiler)] Overall: heck yeah。The Hero of Ages: 9/10。 Yeah, it's the best one。 It does the most to expound on that famous Sandersonian ability to handle hard magic systems and sensibly justifies damn near every weird thing that happens - or that even simply is - in the world of Mistborn。 The main thing here is that there are now so many POVs that it switches between them just as it was getting good。 Every。 Single。 Time。 For the most part I suppose that's good because it leaves you wanting more, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't ruffle my feathers a teensy bit。 It did help though that I like each and every POV character, without exception, even though they're all such different people。 There's a sense of poetry to the ending that some might disagree with, but I personally loved it and I found it retroactively paid off my investment in an entire character's personal development and even mental health。 It's also the bloodiest, the sweetest, the cleverest, and possibly the funniest book out of the three。 Overall: heck yeah!So overall, 8。5/10。 That's。。。 4。25/5? I suppose that's closer to a 4 than a 5, so 4 it is。 I think overall the biggest thing working against it for me is its worldbuilding that pretty much starts and stops in the first book, because the second and third books become so absorbed in the plot that the world was just。。。 yeah。 It's the one you knew from the first book; not much else to it。 I get that the world was homogenized intentionally but still, I wanted more。 Especially considering one of the central characters (view spoiler)[the titular Hero of Ages, in fact! (hide spoiler)] collects and studies religions, plural。 Would have loved to have seen more of that, especially towards the end。 Ah, well。On the flipside, the magic systems in Mistborn are so fascinating, so intricate, and yet presented in such a way that they're easily-digestible。 No pun intended。 A common wisdom in science education is that if you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough。 Sanderson can explain his magics so simply, it belies his deep understanding of not just how a hard magic system should work, but also how to introduce it and then expand it in a way that hides from the readers the fact they're being taught some actual basic chemistry。 His background clearly shows and more rules-oriented readers will absolutely appreciate that。To end it on a high note: this was my first Sanderson book (well, The Final Empire specifically, but you know what I mean) and I can happily report that all I'd heard about Sanderson's First Law of Magic and the Sanderson Avalanche are, indeed, true。 I hadn't had this much fun reading a book in years! Bravo, Brandon, bravo。(How has this not been made into a film or TV series yet? It's been 15 years! I'm glad he's writing the screenplay right now。) 。。。more

Couldn't put it down。I have read a number of Sandersons works, and loved them all! As usual the Mistborn trilogy did not disappoint。 If you are a diehard fantasy fan or just starting into the genre, Mistborn sill keep you glued to its pages for hours!

Go and pick it up now。May you all rule in wisdom。 🖤 。。。more

The first two books were great。 Typical Sanderson style, consistently paced, creative world, emotionally complex characters。 I found it an easy read that was fun and interesting。 The third book was a bit weaker in the plot compared to the first two, but I still enjoyed it and would recommend the series。

Ironically my least favorite Sanderson works, but only because the relentless dystopia of the setting is rough on me these days。 I used to like them a lot more。 Character work is fantastic, magic system is super cool, villains are excellent。 From a pure quality POV, this trilogy is well worth the time investment。

Brandon Sanderson is def a big name in the genre and I was quite intimidated to start the 10 part series - Storm light archive ( both by the sheer volume of material and Sandersons reputation as being absolutely brilliant)。 I have not read any series beyond 3 volumes and I was worried I would give up on a master-peice (SL archives) halfway through for some reason。So I didn't start it。Instead I've started and finished the mistborn series to get a taste of all the sanderson brilliance everyone's r Brandon Sanderson is def a big name in the genre and I was quite intimidated to start the 10 part series - Storm light archive ( both by the sheer volume of material and Sandersons reputation as being absolutely brilliant)。 I have not read any series beyond 3 volumes and I was worried I would give up on a master-peice (SL archives) halfway through for some reason。So I didn't start it。Instead I've started and finished the mistborn series to get a taste of all the sanderson brilliance everyone's raving about。 And I completed it。 Boy were they right! I started reading (actually, listening to) the first book of the Mistborn series at my brother’s recommendation。 It took me a while to get into the first book once I started listening to it, possibly because high fantasy is not a genre that I usually choose to read。 However, because I trusted my brother’s assertion that I would like the book, I continued listening。 Eventually I got to a point where I didn’t want to stop listening because I was so eager to find out what would happen next! I ended up loving the first book。 (view spoiler)[ I was surprised at how complete the ending was。 It didn’t resolve absolutely everything, but it resolved enough that I was satisfied with just having read the first book for a while。 Eventually, though, (hide spoiler)] I started listening to the second。 Like the first, I was only mildly interested in it at first。 When I got to a certain point, though, I suddenly became EXTREMELY interested and remained so through the end。 (view spoiler)[ Both at the end and before, I encountered twists that completely took me by surprise! (hide spoiler)] When I finished the second book, I knew I had to start reading the third! The third had my attention and interest from the beginning, perhaps because I was thoroughly invested in the series by that time, or because the second chapter opened in the perspective of my favorite character, who I hadn’t expected to get any perspective chapters from。 Either way, I was fully invested in the third book all throughout and was always looking for excuses to listen! If you want to know the general tone/vibe of the ending, you can click on the spoiler--I don't give away anything specific (view spoiler)[ It is not a “they all lived happily ever after” type of ending—prepare yourself for some major character deaths。 That being said, I had been warned of this ahead of time, and so I did find the ending satisfying。 (hide spoiler)]。 I think my very favorite thing about this series was the characters。 They are very likeable, and the relationships that form between them are likeable as well。 My two favorite relationships in the series are the main romance and a strong friendship that forms in the second book between two characters who initially did not get along。 In addition to the characters, I am extremely impressed by the detailed world-building and plot-writing。 Everything fits together perfectly, and clues about majorly important revelations are layered throughout the story in such a way that you don’t know until you know, and once you know it all makes sense。 There series has funny parts, sad parts, its heartfelt parts, its exciting parts, and its mysterious parts。 It is a very long read, but an enjoyable one, with plenty of twists and turns along the way。 Additionally, if you listen to the audiobook, the narrator is excellent and really brings the story to life。 In regards to appropriateness of content, there is a lot of violence, some of it graphic and/or gory。 Language is mild (nothing that would be marked Explicit in a song)。 There are a few sexual references and mentions of prostitutes and mistresses, but no overt sex。 Due to the violence, I would only recommend this series to older teenagers and adults。 。。。more
